Sikkim

Hilltop towns, lush green forests and scenic vistas make this former Mountain Kingdom a travelers treat

Overview

Sikkim was its own country up until 1975, helping it retain its own unique brand of Himalayan macroculture. Travelers have only begun to explore what the ‘organic state’ has to offer.

Sitting flush in the lap of the Himalayas, the north eastern state is a never ending series of hills and valleys, high altitude lakes and waterfalls. The Kanchenjunga National Park covers a third of the state, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.

North of Sikkim lies the Indo-China border, evident by the omnipresent influence of Tibetan and Buddhist culture in the state. Monasteries and holy sites adorn the mountainside calling pilgrims and tourists alike.

You’ll find it hard not falling in love with the state and its people – Sikkim is multilingual and multicultural, but always hospitable. Whether you’re shopping at MG Marg or daring the Pelling skywalk, you’ll find a home in the hills of Sikkim.

When to visit Sikkim

The best time to visit Sikkim and its surrounding areas is from the months of March to May.

March - May

The Spring is when most flowers like the Rhododendron and other wild as well as garden flowers are in bloom. The forests are luscious and green. This is also some of the best times to be birdwatching.

October - November

October is when the tourist season starts. You’ll want to avoid the Puja rush if you can. However, this is when the weather is pleasant in most parts. The clear, blue skies provide great views. Rivers, streams and waterfalls are in full flow after the monsoon rain.

November - January

The winter months are cold, but that’s when the skies are clear and views unhindered.

Most areas are covered in beautiful, white snow. The orange orchards bloom from mid-November, with harvest season starting late December.
